SAN — Essential part of the Enterprise computing today
Introduction: -
Is SAN important? Where is SAN used? In this blog, you will study Storage Area Network (SAN) Architecture and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology used in SAN.
SAN is important because it connects the server or enterprise computer with the storage device. SAN has high availability and fast recovery. It is also a high-speed network. WDM is used to increase the network bandwidth so that an enterprise can transmit over a large area.
SAN Architecture: -
As you can see in fig.1 that SAN connects the server and storage device, it helps the Enterprise computer to back up the data to the device. In case of any disaster, the enterprise can recover the data for the storage device
Some natural disaster like an earthquake, Tsunami, etc. impacts the wide area and to avoid any data loss the data must be stored at different geographic location. But SAN can transmit over a limited range. To increase the range of transmission wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) ring technology used in SAN.
Use of WDM:-
With the help of WDM ring now one can transmit the data over a metropolitan area. An enterprise can store the data over a different geographic location. In case of any disaster, enterprise can recover the data from the storage device. In this way, an enterprise can continue its work without any loss. To know more about WDM refer to the video reference link below.
Advantages of WDM Architecture: -
- More Competitive
2. High Bandwidth
3. High Scalability
4. Low-latency edge
Conclusion: -
The implementation of WDM ring technology in SAN expected to appear as the next-generation access network in metropolitan area network, due to its high speed, disaster recovery and availability.
